The NCSF: What you need to know

An NCSF study package is a great way to get started in your healthcare career. Each study package comes with instructor support and a dedicated online study portal. The online portal is easy to navigate and offers support. If you have questions or need additional assistance, contact your instructor. They will be happy to assist. This program is for you.

Continuing education units

Continuing education units are the units earned from continuing education programs. Credits for continuing education are given to college courses completed within a specific timeframe. These courses must be accredited and a transcript indicating a passing grade is required. Each college credit will earn one CEU. CEUs are also awarded for professional development activities. These activities include professional presentations and industry committee work. These activities may lead to individuals earning up to five CEUs.

The NCSF requires that all exercise professionals must recertify at least every two-years. This is necessary to ensure compliance with the current standards, code and any new data. Individuals must complete 10 continuing education units in order to renew their NCSF certification through CEUS. The NCSF approves continuing education credits. They must be earned through a recognized educational institution. If the NCSF denies approval for a course, applicants can appeal the decision.


Exam fee

If you want to keep your credential current, you can apply for recertification through NCSF. Recertification fees for one credential are $75 and for multiple credentials, $100. You can submit an online application and wait for NCSF to process it. Your credential status will then be updated, and will remain valid up to two years. Your recertification package will contain a new card and an updated certificate as well as information on future CEUs.

The NCSF exam is given by the Prometric company. You can make an appointment online or in person at a testing center. Remote access is possible if you have internet. The exam contains 150 multiple choice questions. The fee for taking the exam varies depending on which NCSF testing center you choose. You will pay a different fee if the NCSF tests you in your own home than if the test is done at a Prometric center.

A majority of fitness certifications incorporate basic considerations for training specific populations, such as children, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases. The NCSF, however, has an underwhelming chapter on the topic. In one 15-page chapter, the NCSF covers only a few special populations - diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and working with children.
